Rachael and Anna are maths PhD students on opposite sides of the world. They both often get asked the question “What does being a maths PhD student actually mean?” Disclaimer: we do not sit and do harder and harder sums all day!

The purpose of this blog is:

1. For Rachael and Anna to share ideas from their PhDs with each other, and with you
2. To shed some light on what doing a PhD in maths actually involves

We will mostly share pictures that depict things we are thinking about in our research. Pictures are very important ways to come to understand ideas in maths: often an idea or proof is best described using a picture. Despite this, pictures do not play an important enough role in mathematical writing. This blog aims to counteract this by placing pictures at its centre.

    Dear Rachel and Anna,

I long thought of starting a blog like this but eventually ended up starting a company. I sincerely wish if both of you can write a guest blog for us from the comfort of your time.
